Harvest Monday 1/2/12

The first harvest Monday of 2012 and the perfect time to begin my weighty garden resolution, which is simply to weigh my harvests.  I started an Excel sheet today and even though I still haven't bought a snazzy digital scale yet, I am accepting no excuses.  I am weighing my harvests!

First up is the broccoli at 9oz:

It got covered in a cheddar sauce and was very yummy.

The coldest weather of the winter is arriving on Tuesday night, so I decided to go ahead and harvest the rest of the cabbage.  They have not budged an inch in their size in about a month and they are showing signs of frost damage on their outer leaves.  I harvested the last four heads of cabbage, which were 4.5 lbs.

Finally this week were a couple of turnips, weighing 1.3 lbs.  I only measured the roots because I've accepted the fact that I just don't like turnip greens.

That is all in my garden for the first harvest Monday of 2012, which is a whole lot more (6.5 lbs) than this time last year (0 lbs).  I'm very happy to have my first winter garden!

  1. Great growing! I'm not fond of raw turnip greens, but if they are picked young and cooked with a little bacon and onion they are pretty good, tho I like my beet greens better.

  3. Cabbages are interesting - we both harvested one but in the completely opposite season. There aren't that many things you could do that with.

  4. I may need to harvest some of my cold weather veggies as well. We have had nights in the 20's. I have covered them up, but it may just get too cold. Happy new year and happy gardening!
