Harvest Monday 8/27/12

The summer crops are still chugging along, but at a much slower rate.  The melons are withering away and I probably only have one more to pick (or for the squirrels to pick, depending who gets to it first!).  I pulled the rest of the carrots to make room for fall crops.  The smaller carrots were alright, but the bigger ones are really bitter.  I may start growing carrots in the fall and winter only.  They tend to be much sweeter than the carrots that grew through the heat of summer.

I wasn't much of a photographer this week, but I do have one picture of Saturday's harvests:

Carrots: 15.2 oz
Banana pepper: 0.8 oz
Bell pepper: 8.4 oz
Yellow pear tomatoes: 1.5 lbs
Tomatoes: 1.6 lbs
Green beans: 11.2 oz
Watermelon: 6.9 lbs

Weekly total: 12.2 lbs

Yearly total: 191.94 lbs worth $311.55

That's all the harvests coming from my garden this week, to see what others are harvesting check out Harvest Monday at Daphne's Dandelions.

Happy Gardening!

  1. What a wonderful treat to have a watermelon straight form the garden! Good stuff!

  2. I agree with you, carrots are best in the fall and winter. They seem to have fewer pests then too. Carrots picked in January are by far the best!!

  3. What beautiful bounty. Sad that the carrots don't taste as good as they look...

  4. Beautiful harvest. And I hear you on the carrots. I keep hoping the summer heat will die down soon. I have some fall carrots in and if the heat keeps up they will get bitter. The early growth in the heat seems fine, but if they put on bulk in the heat they won't be good for anything but cooking. I only grow my carrots in the spring and fall. But usually by now we start to see some more cooler temperatures.

  5. Lovely harvest! I don't even try to grow carrots and other roots in the summer, way too hot!

  6. Great harvest. I feel the same way about the carrots. Our summer carrots weren't good. Our beets on the other hand, even though they are a root crop did great!
