Harvest Monday 3/14/16

Goodness life is getting busy!  It's been unseasonably warm here for almost two weeks.  I've been planting up a storm- spinach, lettuce, kale, cabbage, broccoli, peas, radish, beets, carrots and turnips.  On top of that work is going to be really busy for the next seven weeks.  So here's to harvest Monday only a day late on Tuesday!
I've been harvesting some of the winter crops and trying to work on eating my stockpile in the freezer and pantry.  I harvested 4.5 lbs of carrots.  I love carrots- they are sooo delicious!

With those carrots I went on a search for some new carrot recipes to try.  I ended up making carrot patties, which I was surprised when J actually liked them.  He does like carrots, but they had cilantro in them, which he is not a fan of.

My next carrot recipe experiment was sesame honey tempeh with carrots.  While I was cooking this, the neighbor's dog came to visit and J was convinced that she smelled like a skunk.  That was until I sat down next to him to eat my sesame tempeh- it turns out that what he thought smelled like a skunk was my dinner!  Needless to say he didn't try it.  I thought it was delicious.

I also harvested some lettuce for salad.

And then there are my Swiss chard harvests that continue appearing in my breakfasts.  This one was combined with dried cherry tomatoes from the freezer.

I've also been working on using my supply of winter squash and sweet potatoes.  With all the warm temperatures, the garage is not staying cool, so I doubt they are going to store for much longer.  I cooked up some sweet potatoes with chard, goat cheese and gnocchi.

I also roasted some butternut squash and made soup.  This is my favorite soup!  I don't have very many winter squash left.  It will still be awhile before the garden is producing squash, but I feel the need to clear out the pantry and freezer before the garden gets swinging into production again.  I've still got a lot of pickle jars that I have no clue what to do with.

Weekly Harvest:
Carrots: 4.5 lbs
Turnips: 13.4 oz
Lettuce: 2.5 oz
Chard: 8.3 oz
Spinach: 2 oz

Yearly total: 32.5 lbs

That's all the harvests coming from my garden this week.  To see what others are harvesting check out Harvest Monday at Our Happy Acres.

  1. What a great haul of carrots! I love butternut squash soup too. I didn't make any this winter as our squash harvest wasn't that great last year. Like you, we do a lot of 'eating from the freezer' this time of year to clean it out!

  2. What a great harvest and I love how you make such good use cooking your harvest. I have been working away on our yard. Seems it all happens at once, doesn't it! Nancy

  3. I'm with you on clearing out the freezer, etc. - I try to take at least one packet out of the freezer every day or so, either for my lunch or our dinner (dinner being trickier as then I have to contend with picky eaters).

Oh, that's hilarious about the skunky smelling dinner. My husband sometimes uses a spice called chat masala when he eats apples and let me tell you, every time he uses it I inevitably comment that there must be something wrong with our septic as it stinks to high heaven :)

  4. That all looks so good Julie. I had to laugh about the skunk though!
